About the Piece
Inspired by the spiral forms of ammonites found in nature, this piece explores the movement, rhythm and organic growth found within these natural forms.
Layers of felt are cut and stitched using both hand and machine stitching, gradually building a textured, three-dimensional sculptural form. The layers overlap, fold and rise from the surface, creating depth, movement and changing patterns of light and shadow.
A combination of bright yellow-green, soft blue-green and sage tones brings a fresh, lively quality to the work. The spiral draws the eye inward and around the layers, revealing subtle changes in colour, texture and depth.
